What Is Toenail Fungus?
Nail fungus is a very common condition. How do we get nail fungus? Generally from a small injury. Something as simple as cutting our nails too short, or dropping something on our toe, or even from a pedicure. It may start small and just look like a little white or yellow spot under the tip of your nail. As it progresses and gets deeper, the fungus may cause your entire nail to discolor, thicken and separate. It is contagious, so it can spread from one nail to the next. So how we take care of our nails is very important. The #1 rule, is DO NOT dig under the nail. Digging lifts the nail and can actually make it easier for the fungus to spread. Please call us at 972-323-2020 and we would be happy to discuss your situation and get your feet ready for summer.

It is important for you to take proper care of your nails during and after treatment. Our #1 rule, is NO DIGGING. Digging under our nails, causes injury and lifts the nail. This allows the nail fungus to get deeper faster. Also, fungus likes a dark, moist environment - which is a description of the inside of our shoes. So when possible, remove your socks and shoes and let your feet breath. Do not "over clip" or cut your nails too short. Remember, fungus finds small openings in your nails, so be careful how you trim your nails. We also recommend spraying the inside of your shoes with an anti-fungal, like Tinactin. Also, if you do get pedicures (which we do not recommend), make sure that they are not digging or clipping down the sides of your nails. This too can cause nail fungus to spread from nail to nail. can you cure nail fungus"? Laser treatment is safe and effective, however, fungus is something that lives in the environment. Our goal after laser treatment is to practice steps that will help prevent fungus exposure and from it re-entering under your nail and into your nail bed.
Laser treatment may be the solution to clear up that fungus.
The laser toenail fungus treatment targets the fungal infection using the CosMed Nd: YAG Laser. The laser will target the infection beneath the toenail area called the toenail matrix.
It takes about 10-15 minutes per treatment. Treatments are spaced approximately 30 days apart and require between 2-4 treatments. The laser treatment targets only the infected area(s) and leaves the nail and nail-bed unharmed.
Generally, there are no health or age restrictions with laser treatment. In most clinical studies there were no side effects involving the laser treatment of toenail fungus. Medications that are used for fungal infection carry the possibility of kidney problems. However laser treatment does not. There is no downtime with this form of treatment.
The cost of laser toenail fungus treatment will range based on the severity of the infection and the number of toes infected. Please feel free to call us for a free consultation. We are happy to sit down and answer any questions or concerns.
Treating the toenail fungus does not mean you will not get it again. The fungus can enter the nail through an injury or crack in the nail or a cut around the cuticle. Avoid wet, moist environments, such as public showers, locker rooms, public pool areas and other areas where your feet are exposed to unsanitary conditions.
You will need to practice good foot hygiene. Make sure that you wash and sanitize your sheets and bedding often at home. Check your showers and bath areas, including the bath mat. These can be areas that can cause reinfection.
Be cautious when you get pedicures. You should avoid trimming cuticles too short. This provides an area for the fungus to infect once again. Remember to check your shoes and replace them often. Fungus can be thriving in those old sneakers. Always make sure to keep your shoes dry and sanitize them frequently.
